Felling and pruning are not quoted per metre or by a list price per tree: they are quoted by risk. A 12-metre tree over power lines and an identical tree in an open lot are two completely different jobs.
Get your estimate in 2 minutes · Remodelling Cost CalculatorIn building work you can say "so much per square metre" because the work is repeatable. A tree is not. Each one has its height, its lean, its health, its species and its surroundings. And the surroundings are what decide whether the job is routine or delicate.
This is by far the heaviest factor. A tree that can be dropped whole into a clear lot is done in hours. The same tree over a roof, power lines, a fence, a car or the neighbour's house has to be dismantled in sections, lowering each piece on rope and rigging.
That multiplies the time, requires a certified climber and controlled lowering equipment, and leaves no room for improvisation.
Up to a certain height you work from the ground or from a ladder. Above that you need harness climbing or an elevating platform. And the trunk diameter dictates the cutting equipment and how many sections have to be made.
A healthy tree is predictable: you know how the timber will behave under the saw. A tree with internal rot, hollows or a compromised root plate is dangerous precisely because it gives no warning. It is worked with more caution and more support.
Can the truck reach the tree, or does everything have to come out by hand down a side passage? A large tree generates an enormous volume of timber and branches. As a scale reference, haulage and final disposal of waste at an approved landfill is B/. 45.00 per m³ on our rate card, and a medium tree can produce several cubic metres.
If the tree is near live conductors, the job changes category. It may require coordination with the utility to de-energise the section, and personnel trained in electrical risk. Never hire someone who tells you that is "not necessary".
Maintains the tree's structure and appearance. It is done periodically and it is what stops you reaching the point of having to fell.
Removes dead, diseased or broken branches. This is the one that prevents accidents: a three-metre dead branch falling from ten metres is a real hazard.
Moves foliage away from roofs, cabling, light fittings and cameras. In Panama it is the highest-return preventive maintenance there is before the season of rain and wind.
Complete removal, in sections, when the tree is dead, structurally compromised, or its position is incompatible with the building. "Controlled" means each piece is lowered in a directed way, not that it is dropped to see what happens.
Our honest recommendation: before felling, assess whether sanitary pruning solves the problem. A mature tree provides shade, value and coolness that cannot be recovered in less than a decade.
In Panama, felling trees may require authorisation from the environmental authority or the municipality, depending on the species, the location and whether the land is public or private. It is not a formality you can ignore: felling without a permit where one is required exposes the landowner to a penalty.
Before hiring, ask explicitly: does this tree require a permit? A serious company will tell you and guide you on the process. One that says "don't worry, nobody finds out" is leaving the problem with you, because the fine reaches the owner of the land, not the person who did the cutting.
With that we can give you a range over WhatsApp and confirm it at inspection. The inspection is free.
If you see someone up a tree without a harness, in flip-flops, with a borrowed chainsaw, it is not cheaper: it is an accident on your property and under your responsibility.
It is quoted after an on-site inspection, because the price depends on risk: what is beneath the tree, its height and diameter, its health, access for removing the material and proximity to power lines. The inspection is free.
Because it cannot be dropped whole. It has to be dismantled in sections with each piece lowered on rope and rigging, which requires a certified climber, lowering equipment and far more time.
Authorisation from the environmental authority or the municipality may be required, depending on the species, the location and whether the land is public or private. Always ask before hiring: the penalty for felling without a permit falls on the landowner.
Pruning keeps the tree: formative, sanitary to remove dead or diseased branches, or clearance to move foliage away from roofs and cabling. Controlled felling is complete removal in sections, lowering each piece in a directed way.
Before felling, assess whether sanitary pruning solves the problem. A mature tree provides shade and coolness that cannot be recovered in less than a decade.
