How often should a company maintain its grounds?

In Panama the answer changes with the season: fortnightly from May to December and monthly from January to April. Letting more time pass almost always costs more than keeping the rhythm.

The practical rule

This page is guidance on frequency and good practice. Grounds maintenance is quoted by contract after a free site visit, not from a list price.
SeasonMonthsRecommended frequencyReason
WetMay to DecemberEvery 15 daysAccelerated growth from rain and constant humidity
DryJanuary to AprilEvery 30 daysGrass slows down; the focus shifts to watering and tidying
TransitionApril–May and December–JanuaryAdjust to the rainfallChangeover weeks; set on site

That is the baseline for grass. Shaped hedges and shrubs run to their own rhythm: formative pruning every 4 to 8 weeks if you want them to hold their line.

Why waiting costs more

This is the conversation we have every year with new clients. A site left for three months in the wet season does not need "a cut": it needs a rescue.

Added up, a rescue typically costs two to three times what keeping the rhythm would have cost. And the site takes a month or more to look right again.

Frequency by site type

Corporate offices and showrooms

Fortnightly all year, no exceptions. Here the grounds are part of the image: they are the first thing a client sees on arrival. A neglected garden at the entrance says things about the company that no brochure corrects.

Condominiums and residential estates

Fortnightly in the wet season, monthly in the dry, on a fixed schedule and the same day of the week. Predictability matters: residents organise around the visit and the administration can report compliance to the board.

Warehouses and industrial plants

Monthly usually covers the bulk of the site, with two exceptions that need to be more frequent: the fence perimeter, where scrub makes unauthorised access easier and hides damage to the mesh, and the immediate surroundings of the buildings, for vector control.

Vacant plots and land held in reserve

Two to four times a year, more for municipal compliance and pest control than appearance. What matters here is not letting it become closed scrub, because past a certain point the recovery cost jumps.

Schools, clinics and public-use areas

Fortnightly, with particular attention to vector control and safety: no low branches over walkways, no obstruction of sightlines at vehicle entrances.

What should happen on each visit

That last point is the one our corporate clients value most. The crew covers more of the site than anyone else: if they report what they see, grounds maintenance also becomes an early warning system for the rest of the infrastructure.

How to structure the contract

Our recommendation for companies is an annual contract with frequency varying by season: fortnightly from May to December and monthly from January to April. It is more predictable to budget than booking visit by visit, and it avoids the October rescue.

To quote we need the location, the approximate green area, the frequency you are after and photos of the current state. The site visit is free and the contract carries the scope in writing.

Related questions

How often should grass be cut in Panama?

Every 15 days from May to December during the rainy season, and every 30 days from January to April in the dry season. The transition months are adjusted according to the rainfall.

What happens if I let the scrub grow for three months?

It stops being a cut and becomes a rescue: brushcutters in several passes, the waste volume multiplies, the lawn is scalded and bare patches need reseeding. It typically costs two to three times more than keeping the rhythm.

How often should hedges be pruned?

Formative pruning of hedges and shrubs is normally done every 4 to 8 weeks to keep a defined line.

What frequency does a warehouse or industrial plant need?

Monthly for the bulk of the site, but more frequently along the fence perimeter — for security and to spot damage to the mesh — and around the immediate surroundings of the buildings, for vector control.

Is an annual contract better than one-off visits?

An annual contract with frequency varying by season. It is more predictable to budget, keeps the site presentable year round and avoids the cost of a rescue at the end of the wet season.

What should each visit include?

Cutting and edging, border trimming, formative pruning on cycle, weeding, collection and removal of green waste, blowing down pavements, and a report of anything found on site.
